Alan's Ride Diary

The purpose of this page is to share with you some of the wonderful scenery I see during my rides and tell you a little about the ride itself. Click on the thumbnails to see the larger version in the main image panel. There will also be a collection of videos for each ride. If there is an official launch then that will be covered, also an abridged version of the ride and for mountain bike enthusiasts who might be interested in seeing the intricacies of each ride there is a longer more detailed version so you can get a feel for the terrain. These videos are colour coded with GREEN being a launch only, AMBER an abridged version and RED being the full on version.

Alan's Recovery Diary

Due to the horrendous accident that occurred at the end of the 11th Ride (see Video Footage below!) the Ride Diary page has now become Alan's Recovery Page ! Alan will regularly post updates on his progress so that we can keep up to date with how he is and how close he is to completing his challenge. Please don't expect rides to continue any time soon, Alan has some way to go to build himself up to fitness as you will see.

RECOVERY DATE 21/10/2020

Wednesday

During the day my hip gives me the most pain but at night my shoulder decides to wake up and compete for supremacy. As a consequence bedtime is not yet very relaxing.

But hey, here I am posing on the exercise bike although, in truth, today I am only good for the Zimmer frame.

My daughter has gone back to North Yorkshire but I’m blessed with lots of offers of help.

Thank you everyone for your best wishes

Alan

RECOVERY DATE 20/10/2020

Tuesday

Overnight the hip joint gave less pain but when I got comfortable the shoulder says 'don’t forget me'. We found a hole in the jacket right at this spot. That reminds me, always ride with a good helmet. Mine badly scarred but no concussion.

No noticeable improvement in pain during exercise this morning but good when resting. 11am, at last I feel positive and I can definitely resume the ride. When? I’ve no idea, but hey! Only 8 rides to go.

RECOVERY DATE 19/10/2020

Zimmer Frame Alley

Overnight I gave up trying to get my errant leg onto the bed so went to sleep with it dangling over the side.

Exercise alley - not as big as Captain Tom’s patio but it will do for now. A lot of pain in the hip joint which took impact. It feels as if it will be sometime before I can walk without the aid of the Zimmer.

The upside of the crash. My lovely daughter looking after me and her fantastic cooking

RECOVERY DATE 18/10/2020

Following overnight stay in hospital

Lasting impression is a well-run, modern hospital, very attentive with good physio advice for my recovery, tuition of how to climb stairs plus two Zimmer frames.

Daughter, Justine, down from North to take me home and cosset me for a few days, I love it.

RECOVERY DATE 17/10/2020

Following the end of Saturday’s Ride 11

Travelling reasonably fast downhill, round a bend, confronted with a large van coming towards me on my side of the road. Front and rear brakes locked, the bike went down but I had no knowledge of what was happening to me until I come to rest under stationary van. Bike, minus rider, somersaults and crashes into front of van.

Growing number of people standing around, Chris my fellow cyclist taking charge. Walking, or at least limping, until Chris decides I definitely need to get off my feet.

RIDE #11 - Eastern Moors tour

Ride 10 Eastern Moors Tour was not very inspiring. We chose to start and finish at the Curbar Gap road and in between some up, down & moorland. Little did I know the drama was still to come. After we had finished Chris Kent and I started from the top on a fast downhill tarmac road. About half way down as I rounded a bend a large van heading towards me on my side of the road. Unfortunately there was nowhere for me to go so with the brakes locked-on the bike went down and there we parted company. The bike summersaulted and was upright when it hit the front of the van whereas I was in close encounters of the hard kind (tarmac) and finished under the van (see video). From here on, Chris who has had similar experiences racing motorbikes, took control.

Dazed, shocked and very wobbly I was transported to Buxton Cottage Hospital where I found on leaving the van I couldn’t walk.

RIDE #10 - High Peak Circuit

I seem to have grouped a few tough rides together. This is the third in a row. Whilst only about 28Km it featured bottom to top and back down of all four high points around Hayfield. It was exhausting but the scenery was spectacular as can be seen on my pics and hopefully in the video. Chris and Rob were fantastic and we were all glad to be back after 3300 feet of climbs on what proved to be 4 ½ hour ride.

RIDE #9 - Hathersage Circuit

RIDE #8 - Cut Gate special

Ride No8, the book says Cut Gate Special is probably the best. Here is me relaxing before the "nightmare", blissfully unaware of what's to come. If the toughest, boggyist, flooded, sometimes unrideable makes it the best then maybe so. Let's just say I hope there aren't anymore like this. Stay tuned for the video of Ride 8 and see it from my angle!

RIDE #7 - Great Longstone

Great Longstone. It is probably the shortest Enduro at 18km taking in a couple of stiff uphills to Longstone Edge and another leading to a fast downhill to Eyam. There is a very challenging downhill to Stoney Middleton and a repeat of an exciting narrow track to Rowland

RIDE #6 - Hope Valley Watershed

This was a gruelling ride up and down all around the high sides of the Hope Valley, starting and finishing at Mam Tor. One of the longest rides at 35Km where the end point could be seen appealingly about 7Km from home. Exhausting, challenging and, following recovery, enjoyable.

RIDE #5 - Calver Circuit

We started the ride at Rowland so we could have a coffee hallway round. One of the shortest rides and not too challenging. Beautiful scenery from Pilsey, Baslow Edge and Curbar to which we added a fast fun downhill to Edenser and a scary narrow track back to Rowland

RIDE #4 - Gradbach

Tucked away in the bottom left corner of the Peak this area feels more Dark than White - Bumpy off-roads descents, tricky ford crossings, classic uphill off-road climbs through the trees, steep enough and with enough obstacles to test. Blueberry lined paths, tiny lanes, really difficult single-track, stony remote valleys & fantastic views to enjoy.

RIDE #3 - Mam Tor classic

A superb trip of 34K that makes the most of the riding across the high ridges between Castleton and Ladybower. The descent between Hope Cross to Blackley Hay is long & challenging. We decided to do it at speed and it was exhilarating - an understatement, perhaps a little scary! A gentle return ride with an intriguing ride up the fallen road back up to Mam Tor

The ride commenced with a launch event at Pooles Cavern in Buxton

RIDE #2 - Cheedale and Wye V

This mountain bike route uses about 5k of the Monsal Trail and takes you through many of the tunnels. But don’t let the old railway cycle track fool you this is no easy ride. The cross over point at Miller's Dale station sends you out on three loops into the hills. There are some big climbs but we are rewarded with some great challenging descents.

RIDE #1 - Goyt

This was a great mountain bike route in and around Goyt Valley, but, I would say that wouldn’t I, it’s my local. Lots of climbs, descents and varied off-road sections and great views looking back over what you did an hour ago. This should get those muscles ready for more
